Original picture taken in 1940s

This Stela 5 "Tree of Life" Sculpture created by artist Thom Jensen of Salt Lake City, UT

This sculpture (12.5 x 12 x 1.5 inches made of Stone) was created from the original photos taken in the 1940’s by archeologist Dr. Jakeman. Many sculptures have been created and papers published to express other interpretations. This artist has stayed true to the original photos.

Today the Stela 5 "Tree of Life" in Izapa Mexico vaguely represents the original photos. May casting have been taken and vandals have damaged its ancient carvings to where it is hardly recognizable today. This small sculpture is a close representation of what Dr. Jakeman observed in the 1940s.

(Notes from the original manuscripts of the Stela 5 Tree of Life explorations.)

Under the direction of Matthew W. Stirling, exploration of Izapa, Mexico sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution and the national Geographic Society began in April of 1941. This National Geographic photograph is the oldest know photograph of the Stela 5 and is the one Dr. Jakeman used to study the stone.
